May 29th: What's Goin' On?
This weekโs musical selection is not drawn directly from ๐๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐๐ฆ๐ด๐ช๐ณ๐ฆ ๐ง๐ฐ๐ณ ๐๐ถ๐ต๐ถ๐ข๐ญ ๐๐ฆ๐ค๐ฐ๐จ๐ฏ๐ช๐ต๐ช๐ฐ๐ฏ but it captures with such pathos one of that bookโs central ideasโthat it is the circulation of โfear of the otherโ that keeps us killing each other instead of loving each other. As we watch Derek Chauvin kneeling on George Floydโs neck, his eyes blank and pitiless and hardened toward the world, how can we not cry out in our own hearts, โMother, Mother,โ which is what George Floyd himself cried as he was being suffocated to death for no reason except for the fear that had congealed into brutality in the heart of his killer. And on the other side of our own anger, donโt we all then want to cry out, โOnly love can
conquer hate/ You know we've got to find a way/To bring some lovin' here todayโ?
